Balance Tone Set-up Instructions Insert the reed tightly into the drone seat so as the bottom shoulder sits flush with the seat. Add waxed hemp to the bottom of the reed to ensure the reed does not wobble, and to ensure an airtight fit. Reed should sound when blown with the normal pressure to sound the chanter, if reed stops or reed is unstable ie not producing slight double tone, when blown with normal pressure, then move bridle (only make very small movements of the bridle, even to the extent of simply pushing the bridle without it visibly moving) towards drone (away from the plugged end) to make blade longer, the reed should blow off but only when blown extremeley hard. Reed should double tone as air pressure increases then should settle as the correct pressure is reached. Bass drone should show 1/8th inch hemp on the top slide and about 1-2 inch up from the mount on the bottom slide (tuning pins). Tenor drones should show 1/8th inch of hemp. If drone is too low then push in the telescopic body to shorten the reed, a little at a time. If drone is too high then pull out the telescopic body to lengthen the reed, a little at a time. If the reed squeels or whistles (especially when only a little amount of air passes over the reed ie before striking in) or the bass will not strike in, or to reduce the 'buzz sound' the white plug should be pushed in a short way at a time, if pushed in too far the reed will shut off. Once set, due to the plastic body and fibre glass blade, the reeds should last years of frequent use. |
