SM/90 Set-up Instructions

Try removing the big plastic bridle and use a rubber band bridle instead, this makes the reed act the same as other synthetic reeds, and may solve problems such as bad strike ins and reeds cutting off due to too much pressure, it enables better control of tongue length which does affect the performance of the reed the same as any other.

Note: the Bass reed is the same as the Tenors.

1: If the drones tune too high or too low, hold the reed by the Locking Ring and the end of the Body and turn the Locking Ring 1/4 turn so that the flat section is on top, this will loosen the Telescopic Tuning Slide. Being careful not to move the Bridle or the Blade, hold the Body and the Hemp Flange and extend/shorten the reed using a twisting pulling/pushing action. The pre-set distance piece will need to be removed if you want to shorten the reed. This is easily done by just flicking it out. Don't throw them out, they can be put back in later or used as a guide for factory settings. i.e. 19mm for bass and 8mm for the tenors. Finally turn the Locking Ring either direction 1/4 of a turn to lock it off. Short reed - drone tunes higher, long reed - drone tunes lower.

2: Should the reed stop whilst playing, this means the Blade's 'bend memory' has to be reset. This is done by simply slipping a credit card under the blade around 3-4 mm away from the bridle and gently pushing down on the bridle tongue with your thumb. This will reset the blade's memory. You may need to do this a few times until it is spot on. Be careful not to over do this process or you could damage the Blade.

Or simply spring with card or knife .

N.B. Tenors reeds should be set to the same length at all times. If they are and the drones still don't tune at the same height, then the drone tuning higher needs to have a little bit more bend in the Blade as described in section 2

If after all the above you still have a howling reed then check the length of the tongue - 14mm for the tenors and 19mm for the bass. Set to this length and lightly spring the tongue if no sound, make slight movements of the 'bridle' to lengthen or shorten the tongue, and try in drone until a pleasent double tone is loud when blown lightly changes to a quiet drone sound.
